Are you on the verge of ordering new pair of glassses with corrective lenses and stumbled upon ths new term called "PD" or "pupilary distnace"? While it may sound confusing, PD has a very straigh-forward context when it comes to ordering a new pair of frames for yourself. It is simply the distance between one center of the pupil to another and is a required metric to order the most perfect lenses for your glasses.

Some people measure PD online while others are heavily reliant on the optrametrist. Either way - measuring your PD is as important as choosing the correct frame size. It may sound like a fancy medical term but it does justice to your vision, epsecially your lenses. Indeed, glasses that are made with PD value offer a more accurate vision correction as it measures the nuances of the pupil's distance from one center to another, giving lens manufacturers a shot at making perfect pair of glasses.

How To Read Your Pupilary Distance (PD) On The Prescription?

When it comes to reading your PD, it's important to either turn to professional help or build up your understanding about their 2 different types curated for patients. First, it's binocular PD type which is a simple distancing between one center of the pupil to another. It is also one of the most common types of PD's for moderate vision correction.

With this, the monocular PD type is used to determine the right PD measurement for faces whose pair of eyes don't align well. It is for faces that are not symmetrical with one eye positioned with a considerable distance from the other.

In this case, It is recommended to ask a healthcare professional or an optometrist about the type of PD you need to order your new pair of eyeglasses. It should also be noted that not all optometrists would add the PD value to your prescription. In this case, it's best to request them to measure your PD. You can also measure it at home with a few simple tricks.

What If The PD Measurement Is Wrong?

Having a correct PD is at the nexus of using your pair of eyeglasses in an efficient manner as it helps discover the right focal point for the lenses to be. If you have a wrong PD number, there are multiple chances that you might encounter blurry vision, headaches, or even vision shakes from time to time, indicating that your PD is not correct.

Further, measuring correct PD for people suffering from high-scale astagmatism, or are long-term myopia is twice as important as there are severe recoils to this negligence in terms of double-vision images, and severe eye fatigue.

It is also noted amongst patients that an incorrect PD calculation leads to boosted brain activity causing confusions, head-spinning, and blurry vision. It makes the visual cortext work harder leading to severe symptoms of extreme discomfort, lazy-eye, eye-fatigue and so forth.

MEASURING YOUR PUPILARY DISTANCE (PD)

Eye doctors may sometimes be reluctant to release your pupillary distance (PD) because they prefer you to purchase your eyewear from their clinic. If that happens, you can measure PD online or conduct a manual pupillary distance measurement yourself. This is especially important when buying eyewear online, as every set of lenses has an optical center based on your PD value. Providing the correct PD value for glasses ensures precise lenses and optimal vision.

To calculate pupillary distance online manually, you’ll need a mirror and a millimeter ruler. Stand about eight inches from a well-lit mirror and look straight ahead. Hold the ruler against your brow line, as if wearing glasses, for an accurate measurement.

Close your right eye and align the ruler’s zero with the center of your left pupil. Then, close your left eye and open your right eye while keeping your focus straight. The millimeter line that aligns with the center of your right pupil is your PD measurement.

For the best accuracy, repeat this process three to four times before using the measurement for your eyewear purchase.

Another effective way to measure PD online manually is with the help of a friend. This method is similar, but your friend can assist by aligning the millimeter ruler’s zero over the center of one pupil and then measuring the distance to the center of the other pupil. Comparing results from both methods can help confirm accuracy.

Once you determine your PD value for glasses, be sure to write it down for future use. While pupillary distance typically remains the same, it’s a good idea to check it again if you switch to different frame styles.
